1) TERM OF THE DAY (or month!)
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
– A blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs
March is DVT Awareness Month! Educating the public is of high importance to Ames Walker.
DVT is not a widely known about condition, and can quickly become dangerous, if not prevented, or treated immediately. When left untreated, a DVT can lead to a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) if the clot breaks free and travels to the lungs which can turn deadly. DVT can affect ANYONE, no matter what shape you are in, your age, or your gender. Situations that might cause a DVT center around poor blood flow. Inactivity such as sitting, standing, or lying down for extended periods of time, significantly decrease the flow of blood in the lower body. Risk factors include long periods of travel with limited mobility and post surgical immobility, but these are not the only causes of a DVT. Many other factors are listed at this website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Deep-vein-thrombosis/Pages/Causes.aspx
Check back EVERY WEEK to see our blog posts, infographics, trivia questions, contests, and MORE that will help you further understand how you can protect yourself, and your loved ones, from becoming victims of this easily-preventable illness!
